Epidemiology of HIV-infection/AIDS in Ukraine (by 01.01.2009)
The number of newly reported HIV infection cases has been annually growing since 1999. In 2008, 18,963 new HIV infection cases were registered among the citizens of Ukraine. In 2008, HIV incidence rate in Ukraine was 40.9 per 100,000. During 2006-2008 the rate of growth of this indicator had been declining by more than twice – from + 16.8 % to + 7.6 %.
A positive declining trend in the number of new AIDS cases was observed in 2008: 4,380 new AIDS cases were reported, including 74 among children under 14 years of age. The AIDS incidence rate in Ukraine in 2006 had a positive declining trend and was 9.5 per 100,000 population in 2008 (9.8 per 100,000 population in 2007 and 10.1 in 2006).
By 01.01.2009 91,717 HIV infected people were under medical follow-up, including 10,410 patients with AIDS. HIV and AIDS prevalence rate amounted to 198.6 and 22.5 per 100,000 population respectively. The highest rates of HIV infection prevalence are still observed in Dnipropetrovsk (455.2 per 100,000), Odessa (454.0), Donetsk (442.9) and Mykolayiv (434.3) oblasts, city of Sevastopol (334.8) and AR Crimea (268.6).
During the entire period of epidemiological surveillance over HIV infection in Ukraine the number of people, who died of AIDS-related diseases has been growing. In 2008 the epidemic of HIV infection claimed the lives of 2,710 AIDS patients, including 14 children.
In 2008 the rate of mortality of AIDS-related diseases in Ukraine was 5.8 per 100,000 population compared to 5.4 in 2007 and 5.2 in 2006. In 2008 the growth rate of mortality of AIDS-related diseases somewhat increased and amounted to + 7.4%.
According to the statistical data, the share of HIV transmission through the injection of narcotic drugs in the structure of other HIV transmission routes continues to decrease on the background of a gradual growth of HIV infection through sexual intercourse.
In 2008 the following structure of HIV infections in Ukraine was observed: parenteral (mostly with injections of narcotic drugs) – 37.0 %, sexual (mostly heterosexual route) – 41.9 %, children born to HIV infected mothers – 19.2%, unidentified transmission route – 1.9 %.
According to the sentinel surveillance data, the HIV infection epidemic in Ukraine is still concentrated in the most-at-risk groups. At the same time we can say, that according to the official case reporting during 3 recent years the country is observing the trend towards stabilization of the epidemic situation among IDU, which is confirmed by the data of sentinel surveillance studies in some cities (Kharkiv, Kherson and Cherkassy).
A growing share of heterosexual HIV transmission and the number of HIV infected women in child-bearing age contributed to the increased number of children born to HIV infected mothers. In 2008, there were registered 3,635 children born to HIV infected mothers (3,430 children in 2007 and 2,822 children in 2006).
By 01.01.2009, according to the statistical data, there were 7,985 children born to HIV infected mothers, under medical follow-up in Ukraine, including 1,968 children with the established HIV infection diagnosis and 6,017 children awaiting the confirmation of HIV infection diagnosis.
In 2008, according the seroepidemiological monitoring, there were 3,220,112 screening tests for HIV performed and 37,298 diagnoses were confirmed.
